Is a duffel bag or wheeled carry-on bag better?
Shopping . TravelIs a duffel bag or wheeled carry-on better?
There are obviously pros and cons of each.
The pros of a duffel bag are:
- Lightweight
- Takes up minimal space for storage
- Larger capacity (no wheels to take up space)
- Less likely to be told to gate check your carry on
- Easier to run through airport to catch a flight
- Easier to walk down stairs (I recognized this benefit when deplaned onto tarmac in Iceland)
- Durability
- Can easily navigate rough terrain
- less worrying about if it will fit in overhead
Cons of a Duffel Bag as a Carry On:
- Need to carry it
- not as easy to board/ walk through aisle of plane
- Can get heavy to carry if overpacked
- Need to be strategic when packing fragile items
You can probably see why I chose a carry-on. My pros far outweighed the cons. But what about the Pros of a wheeled-carry on?
There are so many choices when comes to wheeled carry ons included hardshell, soft-shell, 2 wheels, 4 wheels, but that discussion is for another time.
Pros of a wheeled carry on:
- Do not need to carry, can easily navigate airport
- More protective
Cons of a wheeled carry on:
- Heavier
- Takes up more space
- Wheels can break
- Smaller capacity
- If also have a Checked Bag, wheeling two bags is not as easy – this was a big reason why I went with a Duffel Bag.
- Greater chance will need to gate-check bag
I am so happy with my purchase of the Patagonia 40L Black Hole Duffel Bag. I used it on my recent travels to Copenhagen, Faroe Islands, Reykjavik, Madrid, and Tel Aviv.
